Cancer Prevention

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 170,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. are caused by tobacco use alone. In addition, scientists estimate that approximately one-third of all cancer deaths that occur this year will be related to poor nutrition, physical inactivity, overweight and obesity.

Many cancer deaths can be prevented by greater use of established screening tests for breast, colon, rectal and uterine cervix cancer. For example, regular screening for colorectal cancer can reduce the number of people who die of this disease by at least 30%. A mammogram given every one to two years can reduce the risk of breast cancer by about 16% for women aged 40 years or older. The Center for Preventive Medicine® provides imaging and specialized testing to help you understand if you have risk factors for developing these cancers. These imaging tests include mammogram, CT scans, MRIs, PET, and ultrasounds. We also offer advanced laboratory genetic testing to determine markers for various types of cancer.

At The Center for Preventive Medicine, we help you get a better picture of your cancer risk potential and develop a program to minimize your risks, including a diet and regular exercise regimen to control your weight. Visit one of our Centers and we will help you develop a path to prevention that makes you feel better and may help you live longer.
